It is a viral skin disease that first causes redness and then water-filled blisters, usually in older ages. It involves sensory nerve cell groups. The first symptom of the disease is often severe pain.

Skin rash appears approximately 2-3 days after the pain, and sometimes this period may not last up to 2 weeks. The skin rash is unilateral and does not cross the midline.

The most common locations are the chest and head regions. Shingles is more common in the elderly, those with diseases that weaken the immune system, and those who are stressed.
