Herpes is a viral infection that can occur anywhere in the body and is accompanied by water-filled blisters. It is common in both children and adults. The viruses that cause cold sores are “herpes simplex” viruses.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 often causes disease around the mouth and face, while HSV-2 causes disease in the genital area. Herpes viruses are contagious.

It is transmitted from person to person by kissing or using a common object. Stress, infection, fatigue, strokes, weakening of the immune system and excessive sun exposure can trigger the formation of herpes.
